PV Sindhu wins Singapore Open title with a thrilling victory over Wang Zhi Yi

Indian shuttling superstar PV Sindhu marked her third title triumph of the year as she took out Wang Zhi Yi in an adrenaline rushing summit clash at the Singapore Open Super 500 on Sunday.

Seeded third in the tournament, Sindhu dominated into the first game with racking up 13 back to back points to seal a 21-9 scoreline within only 12 minutes to take the lead, but Wang Zhi Yi showed her own skillsets in the second.

The world no 11 Chinese made a stunning comeback in the second game, handing Sindhu a major second game setback to level the odds with a 21-11 finish, as the thrilling final went into the decider.

In the final game, Sindhu had fallen behind at the start but took a comprehensive lead. Wang Zhi did make efforts to inch closer after the interval, but ultimately fell short against Sindhu’s impeccable performance lands her the match with a 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 victory.

The win marks Sindhu’s maiden title at Singapore Open, as well as her third title feat this season, in addition to the two Super 300 wins- Syed Modi International and Swiss Open earlier. The new Super 500 crown comes as a massive stimulus for Sindhu ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games, set to commence from 28th July in Birmingham.

“Getting this title means a lot, this would give me a lot of confidence, this will take me to another level,” Sindhu said after the victory, “The whole week, a couple of matches were in three games, some were in two. But each match was important from the start.”

“Now it’s time to relax a bit and focus on the Commonwealth Games. This is just the start, but it’ll give me a lot of confidence,” she added. [H/T Hindustan Times]
