EACH NATION IS TO HAVE TWO FLAGBEARERS: ONE MALE AND ONE FEMALE

The authorities organizing the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England, had intimated to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) that two flagbearers – one male and one female – would have be to named from each nation. Sindhu had already been announced as the flagbearer of the Indian contingent by that point – following an unfortunate Covid-19 related ordeal – and IOA decided upon Manpreet as the male counterpart.

MANPREET WAS SELECTED BECAUSE OF HIS CRUCIAL ROLE IN LEADING INDIA TO AN OLYMPIC MEDAL IN HOCKEY

“Mr Manpreet Singh ended Indian hockey’s 41-year Olympic medal drought with a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year. He is one of the finest athletes to have ever represented India on the international stage. We are delighted to name him and Ms Sindhu as the two Flagbearers who will lead the Indian contingent out at the Parade of Nations tomorrow during the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games,” IOA Acting President Anil Khanna noted, praising him as one of the finest athletes to have ever represented India on the international stage.

The selection criteria for male and female flagbearers were identical. Three names were shortlisted in both categories by a four-member committee. boxer Amit Panghal and experienced table tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal were also shortlisted for being the male flagbearer. While IOA Acting Prez Khanna noted that all of the candidates were deserving, Manpreet’s name was finalized because of his tremendous leadership skill that ended India’s 41-year drought in winning an Olympic medal in Hockey, a sport the nation once dominated on the international stage.
