PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen Make Winning Starts At US Open

Indian shuttling stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen won their respective campaign openers at the US Open Super 300 tournament at Council Bluffs, Iowa on Thursday.

Sindhu took on Disha Gupta, an Indian-origin US player in her women’s singles opening match. It was a dominating win for the Olympic medalist as she took only 27 minutes to secure a 21-15, 21-12 straight game win to earn the second round berth.

Lakshya, on the other hand, locked horns against Kalle Koljonen of Finland in the men’s counterpart. Another straight game win was produced from the Indian contingent as Lakshya walked over his Finnish opponent  21-8, 21-16 in just 30 minutes. S. Sankar Subramanian joined Lakshya in the men’s singles second round after defeating Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen 21-11, 21-16 in the first round.

B. Sai Praneeth, however, bowed out against world No. 7 Li Shi Feng after a hard fought match that lasted three rounds and the Chinese shuttler walked out with a 16-21, 21-14, 21-19 victory in one hour and 14 minutes. Ruthvika Shivani was the second Indian to exit from the tournament after losing to Lin Hsiang Ti of Chinese-Taipei 14-21, 11-21.
