Indian badminton aces PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth have sailed into the pre-quarterfinal stage of the ongoing Korea Open Super 500 tournament currently taking place at the Palma Stadium in Suncheon after winning their first round clashes on Wednesday.
Fresh off of the Swiss Open title last month, Sindhu took on Lauren Lam in her women’s singles opener, and thrashed the American shuttler 21-15 21-14. The double Olympic medallist, who is seeded third in the tournament, took an early 7-2 lead in the match, followed by increasing it to 16-9 before taking the first game.
The second game saw an impressive counter from Lam as both shuttlers went back and forth at the start, but Sindhu managed to remain on a single point lead at the break, before pacing ahead by six points and securing the win.
On the other hand, Srikanth clinched a 22-20, 21-11 win against world no 35 Daren Liew of Malaysia. The fifth seeded Indian had a lagging start, falling behind 0-3 at first and the first game was a neck to neck battle between the two before the Indian managed to edge it out to
The second game saw a more comfortable performance from the world championships silver medallist as Srikanth, took an early 4-0 lead. Liew would eventually catch up but Srikanth blasted away with an eight point lead to finish off the second game with dominance and take home the victory.
The Indian contingent also saw progress in the men’s doubles section, as the pairs of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and MR Arjun-Dhruv Kapila made winning starts to their Korea Open campaign.
Satwik and Chirag took out local duo Tae Yang Shin and Wang Chan 21-16 21-15, while the Arjun-Kapila pair got the better of Ba Da Kim and Hee Young Park, another Koeran duo via walkover. Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli, unfortunately, saw her campaign ending after she lost to second seeded Korean shuttler An Seyoung with a 5-21 13-21 defeat.
Up next, Sindhu will take on Japanese player Aya Ohori and Srikanth’s next opponent will be Misha Zilberman of Israel. The Satwik-Chirag pair will take on Hee Yong Kai Terry and Loh Kean Hean of Singapore up next, while Arjun and Kapila are slated to face Indonesian duo Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
