The 2024 IWF Youth World Weightlifting Championships held in Lima, Peru, marked a historic moment for India as Preetismita Bhoi and Bedabrat Bharali were declared the best lifters. This was the first time Indian athletes won this prestigious award at a World Championship.
Preetismita Bhoi’s Record-Breaking Performance
Preetismita Bhoi won the gold medal in the women’s 40kg category and set a new Youth World Record. She surpassed the previous record of 75kg by lifting an impressive 76kg. Bhoi’s snatch lift of 57kg brought her total effort to 133kg, just 2kg shy of the youth world standard on the competition’s first day.
Bedabrat Bharali, a 17-year-old athlete, made history by becoming the first Indian male lifter to win a gold medal in the tournament. He captured three gold medals with a total lift of 296 kg (Snatch – 136 kg, Clean & Jerk-160 kg, Total – 296 kg), surpassing his fellow competitor by 12 kg. His performance broke his national record of 133kg at the selection trials in Patiala on May 20.

India’s Overall Performance
India’s overall medal tally at the Lima Youth World Weightlifting Championships rose to an impressive 17 medals, comprising 6 Gold, 4 Silver, and 7 Bronze.
