After claiming an Olympic Bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, PR Sreejesh is embarking on a new chapter in his illustrious career. The legendary goalkeeper has decided to retire from the Indian Men’s Hockey team and take up a coaching role.
PR Sreejesh awaits the Coaching Task
Sreejesh recognizes that the shift from player to coach requires mental readiness. He plans to spend the next 2-3 months preparing himself for this new responsibility. As a coach, he’ll need to guide and inspire young talents, a role distinct from his playing days.
“As a coach, what I should do or the transition from a player to a coach, I have to mentally prepare for that. So, I will spend the next 2-3 months on that,” Sreejesh told PTI.
Returning to Kerala after his successful Olympics campaign, Sreejesh received a hero’s welcome. A large crowd, including MLAs, greeted him at the airport. Fans waved placards featuring his photo, and he embarked on a celebratory roadshow, where well-wishers showered him with flowers and cheers.
“Working hard for the country, sacrificing a lot and then winning a medal, it is not just for me, but for the country. So, to be a part of this happiness, the welcome organised by everyone is like the cherry on top of the cake. The pleasure is doubled,” said Sreejesh.
Sreejesh’s inaugural task as the head coach of the Junior Men’s hockey team is expected to be the Sultan Of Johor Cup in October. This tournament will test his coaching acumen and set the tone for his new role.
Sreejesh’s journey from the goalposts to the sidelines promises to be as exciting as his playing days. His dedication to Indian hockey continues, albeit in a different capacity, as he shapes the future stars of the game.
