Positive, Negative, Positive – Mohammad Hafeez’s Covid-19 conundrum

Just a couple of days ago, a whopping seven new COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed from the Pakistani cricket team. Among the players who contracted the virus was Mohammad Hafeez, the veteran all rounder who was previously selected for the squad’s tour of England. However, just two days after his test results, Hafeez claimed to be COVID-19 negative. Now, another test has been conducted by the PCB, and he is positive again.

Hafeez’s ticket to England was cancelled along with Wahab Riaz, who were supposed to fly to England for the series in August and September. However, following the reworking of the Pakistani team, Hafeez revealed that he has gone for another testing, this time in a private facility.

“After Tested positive COVID-19 acc to PCB testing Report yesterday, as 2nd opinion & for satisfaction I personally went to Test it again along with my family and here I along with my all family members are reported Negetive Alham du Lillah. May Allah keep us all safe,” the former skipper tweeted on Wednesday, along with a report.

Following the news, the PCB conducted another test from Hafeez’s earlier sample at the the Shaukat Khanum Memorial hospital, and confirmed that the player is indeed positive.

The situation is embarrassing for the PCB, who have hinting at disciplinary actions to be taken against Hafeez, for not remaining in self isolation after the positive results in his first test results.

“This is a very intriguing situation for the board,” an internal source from the PCB said, “it will be interesting to see what is the result of the second test taken today of the 10 players, who tested positive in the first test earlier this week will come.”

On the other hand, another source from the board has spoken in defence of the 39 year old, stating that it was a ‘precautionary measure’ from Hafeez and also cleared his ‘unintentional embarrassment’ of the PCB.

The Pakistani cricket team is set to leave for their tour of England on 28th June.
