Delhi Capitals were hit with a heart-wrenching loss in the final over against the Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede yesterday. Ricky Ponting admitted that Ravichandran Ashwin, who bowled beautifully after a forgettable game against CSK, should have been given the final over of his spell.

The bowlers had RR on the ropes with the scoreboard reading 42-5 in the second innings. The overseas players took the inaugural champions hoe which prompted Ricky Ponting to assess where they went wrong while defending the total.

DC skipper, Rishabh Pant, still young when it comes to captaincy, gave the off-spinner three overs, which only yielded 14 overs.

During the virtual press conference following the end of the game, the former Aussie skipper admitted the mistake made in the second innings.

“I thought he bowled beautifully, so probably it was a mistake on our behalf, That’s certainly something that we will talk about when I get a chance to sit down with the team,” said Ponting.

“He gave away only 14 in his 3 overs, hadn’t conceded a boundary. He had a disappointing game in the previous match. He’s worked really hard on his bowling to make sure that he gets things right in this game,” Ponting added.

Pant opted for the services of Stoinis instead of Ashwin’s final over. The over from the all-rounder turned out to be crucial as he conceded 15 runs, giving RR momentum for the middle overs and the final flourish.

Despite the strong presence of dew, which was also brought by Pant after the match. The coach expressed his disappointment with the death bowling. He believed that there were too many deliveries in the slot which made it easy for Chris Morris to pick up and dispatch over the fence.

The usually reliable Kagiso Rabada conceded 15 runs off the penultimate over. In the final over, defending 12 runs, Tom Curran could only muster a slow length ball and a full toss which were both hit on the leg side for a maximum.

“We probably gave him a few too many easy balls, a few too many slot balls if you like,” Ponting said. “The length wasn’t quite where it needed to be. If you look at the replay of the game, if you bowled a reasonable yorker, he didn’t score off them.

“If it was back of a length, sort of, above stump high, he didn’t get hold of them either, especially with pace on the ball. We talked about how to bowl to him, but the execution probably wasn’t there,” Ponting added.
