Parthiv Patel leans towards Rohit Sharma over Virat Kohli in the captaincy debate

Apart from Rohit Sharma’s appearance in India’s next series against Australia and Virat Kohli’s absence in the last three Tests, both of the star players are in the news for a different reason – the split captaincy. Meanwhile, Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel has opened up on the same matter. He said Rohit Sharma is a better captain than Virat Kohli and he is a better choice as a skipper in the side in the limited-overs format of the game.

His comments came after Rohit Sharma captained Mumbai Indians to its record-fifth IPL title and Virat Kohli failed to lead his side, Royal Challengers Bangalore to the final stage once again.

“The way Rohit Sharma does captaincy, I like it more, he is calmer on the ground, takes better decisions under pressure and according to me he is a better captain when it comes to building the team,” Parthiv Patel said during the Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

However, Patel has played under the leadership of both of them in the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far and he has closely observed their performance as a captain as well. He has played under Rohit for three years since 2015 to 2017 and then the next three years under  Kohli. Meanwhile, he shared that Rohit is a better decision-maker in pressure situations.

“I have seen Rohit taking decisions on his own in crunch situations while Virat depends a lot on other players in those situations,” he said.

He also shared that Rohit has more experience than Kohli when it comes to handling the team and is he is capable of taking important decisions on the spot which goes in the favour of the team. However, he claimed that he does not consider Kohli as a bad captain but it’s just he hasn’t won enough tournaments, whereas Rohit pretty well knows how to win tournaments.

“To win tournaments you need to know how you are going to win them,” stated Parthiv Patel. He also added that Kohli has not won much in the crunch situations and that has left him behind a little. He also opined that this was the reason which cost team India the 50-over World Cup and the Champions Trophy final as well.
