Tokyo Paralympics: Bhavinaben and Sonalben suffer defeats in table-tennis opening round fixture

Indian paddlers Bhavinaben Patel and Sonalben Manubhai Patel lost their opening fixture in Class 3 and Class 4 respectively at the Tokyo Paralympics. The events started today following the culmination of the 2021 Olympics.

Sonalben Patel held the advantage after the first three games, but in the end, succumbed to a defeat against Li Quan of China by 11-9, 3-11, 17-15, 7-11 4-11. Li Quan is ranked number four in the world and also had won the silver medal in the 2016 edition of the Paralympics.

Bhavinaben Patel was up against the number one ranked  Zhou Ying of China in Class Four of Group A and was put away in straight sets 3-11 9-11 2-11.

The participants in Class Three have no control of their upper body, but have minimal damage to the arms, and as a result, it is not as impaired as the trunk. On the other hand, competitors of the Class Four division have far more control of their arms and sitting balance, but do not have control over their lower body which might have been caued due to cerebral palsy or an injury to the lower spinal cord.
