The opening partnership has rarely failed for the last year’s finalists and Pant lauded them for giving the side a good start on a wicket that was gripping and gradually slowing down.

“Shikhar and Prithvi gave us a very good start. In the first innings, the ball was gripping, and even in the second innings, it was slow but the way they started was commendable. It feels so good when you have a great start in every match,” Pant said during the post-match presentation

Delhi Capitals registered 63 runs in the powerplay itself chasing the 168 run target set by Punjab Kings devoid of KL Rahul.

Prithvi Shaw had the baton after scoring 39 off just 21 deliveries in the opening phase of the innings. The youngster could not keep going after being bamboozled by Harpreet Brar’s very first delivery.

Fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan carried on and the chasing side never felt the pressure of the required rate after the fall of the wicket as a result of a seamless transition.

Steve Smith took advantage of the longer boundary and knocked the ball around for singles and doubles. While the Australian succumbed and skipper perished, Dhawan kept going and finished the chase unbeaten alongside Shimron Hetmyer.

The flamboyant left-handed opener scored 69 off 47 deliveries, with 6 fours and 2 sixes. He now has 380 runs in the tournament with 3 fifties as the tournament makes its way into the second half.

“Really happy with the way we chased the score down. Prithvi and myself were able to get a great start. Smith chipped in nicely and I knew I had to go till the end. Perfectly crafted innings, I enjoyed it. Once we knew that we can close the game, we wanted to finish the game early around 19 overs, but Hetmyer finished it in the 18th,” Dhawan stated

Delhi Capitals will play their final match in Ahmedabad against Kolkata Knight Riders before moving onto Kolkata, where they will play all of their remaining five league stage matches.
