In a strategic move to bolster their squads for the upcoming 2025 season, Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises have submitted a list of unsold overseas players from the recent IPL mega auction to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This decision comes as the PSL and IPL seasons are set to overlap for the first time next year, presenting a unique challenge in player availability decisions.
Top picks for Pakistan Super League
The list includes several high-profile players who went unsold at the IPL auction, such as David Warner, Kane Williamson, Adil Rashid, Alex Carey, Keshav Maharaj, Shai Hope, Donovan Ferreira, Daryl Mitchell, Jonny Bairstow, and Akeal Hossain. With the PSL traditionally held in February and March, and the IPL starting towards the end of March, franchises are keen to secure these players to strengthen their teams.
Franchise owners have urged the PCB to engage with the agents and boards of these players to confirm their availability for the PSL 2025 draft. The PCB is considering holding the draft abroad, possibly in London or Dubai, to improve the league’s brand image and attract international talent. This move follows the BCCI’s decision to host the IPL auction overseas in recent years.
The potential overlap of the PSL and IPL seasons adds a new dimension to player availability decisions. While most players are likely to choose the more lucrative IPL, the PSL franchises are hopeful that some high-profile players will opt to join the Pakistani league, especially those who missed out on IPL contracts.
