Pakistan ready to accept hybrid Champions Trophy, seeks uniform ICC policy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has agreed to host the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy under a hybrid model. This decision comes after months of negotiations and disagreements with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

PCB’s policy for Champions Trophy

  1. Hybrid Model: India will play its matches in Dubai due to security concerns, while Pakistan will host the rest of the games. If India qualifies for the final, it will also be held in Dubai.
  2. Uniform Policy: The PCB has demanded that this hybrid model be applied to all ICC events hosted by India until 2031. This means Pakistan would not travel to India for matches during these events.
  3. Financial Demands: The PCB is also seeking a larger share of the ICC’s revenue as part of the deal.
  4. Political Tensions: The decision stems from ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, which have impacted their bilateral cricketing ties.
  5. ICC’s Role: The ICC has been working to find an acceptable solution to ensure a hassle-free tournament. The new ICC chairman, Jay Shah, has a significant role in coordinating between the PCB and BCCI.

The PCB’s stance is a significant shift from its earlier threat to boycott the tournament if its hosting rights were not granted in full. The official schedule for the tournament is expected to be announced soon, with the event likely to take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025.
