India had lost the opening Test at Lord’s by a significant margin. The pressure was on as they entered the Manchester Test, trailing 0-1 in the series. Sachin contributed with a solid 68 runs in the first innings, but India still conceded a lead of 87 runs to England.
Chasing a daunting target of 408 runs, India found themselves in trouble at 183 for six. The legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev had just been dismissed. It was then that Sachin, batting at No. 6, stepped up.
Undeterred by the likes of Devon Malcolm, Angus Fraser, and Eddie Hemmings, Sachin played a spectacular innings. He crafted a 119-run masterpiece from 189 balls, adorned with 17 fours. His composure and strokeplay defied his age.
Sachin found an able ally in Manoj Prabhakar. Together, they stitched a crucial 160-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Prabhakar’s 67 runs provided vital support.
India managed to avoid defeat, securing a draw in the Test. Sachin’s century was not only a personal milestone but also a lifeline for the team. This century marked the beginning of Sachin’s illustrious career. Little did we know that it would be the first of his 100 international hundreds—a record that still stands.
