India’s star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, recently revealed his favourite Indian cricket captain, and it’s not the usual suspects—Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, or MS Dhoni. In a light-hearted manner, Bumrah humorously mentioned that he himself has had the opportunity to lead India on a few occasions, making himself his favourite captain.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Captaincy tenure

“See, my favourite captain is me because I have captained a few games. Obviously, there are great captains, but I will take my name as my favourite captain,” Bumrah told Indian Express.

Bumrah’s captaincy journey began on July 1, 2022, during the rescheduled 5th Test against England in Birmingham. Despite suffering a back injury and undergoing surgery after that match, he made a triumphant return, leading India in the T20I series. Currently, Bumrah serves as the vice-captain of India’s Test team, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.

Interestingly, Bumrah also praised Rohit Sharma for his exceptional captaincy. He highlighted how Rohit creates a comfortable atmosphere for young players, encouraging them to take responsibility and emphasizing equality within the team. Rohit’s empathy toward bowlers stood out, making him a bowler’s captain. Bumrah also acknowledged Virat Kohli’s leadership impact, even when not officially captaining the side.

“In the recent England series, when the youngsters came, Rohit made the atmosphere very comfortable; he took extra effort; he will take them out and talk to them about the game and try and push them to take the responsibility, as the youngsters should think all are equally important; there is no senior or junior,” Bumrah said.

“A captain needs to have empathy towards bowlers and Rohit Sharma is one of the few captains who has empathy for bowlers”.

“Virat Kohli is still a leader in the team, he might not be the captain”.
