After BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal put the rumours of a potential split captaincy to rest, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has backed those comments. He claimed that there will be no change in captaincy as long as the Indian team keep delivering results.

Earlier, reports emerged that Virat Kohli is ready to step down from his captaincy roles in limited-overs cricket to focus more on his batting. The claims also added that Rohit Sharma would have been the person appointed as the next captain of India following the 2021 T20 World Cup. He has led India on occasions in the absence of Virat Kohli and has a decent record with an Asia Cup under his belt. What speaks volumes, is his record with the Mumbai Indians, a franchise he has led to 5 IPL triumphs.

But the BCCI responded by claiming that they have full faith in Virat Kohli and no talks regarding a captaincy change have taken place.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was on the same wavelength as well. He told the Indian Express:

“As long as a team is performing while on the crease, the question of change in captaincy doesn’t arise,”

Team India have attained new heights under the leadership of Kohli, who took on the leadership role for the first time in 2014 following MS Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket. He was later on given the responsibility to lead the team in limited-overs cricket as well in 2017.

While a rise in the ranking, improved fitness and stamina and a robust bench strength have been the highlights of Kohli’s tenure as captain, the absence of a major ICC trophy remains the focal point.

Kohli had 2 occasions to deliver a major title as a captain. He succumbed to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy Final and fell to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semi-final. The upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE is a great opportunity for Kohli to cement his legacy.
