Nicholas Pooran

During the T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran etched his name in cricket history by equaling the record set by two legendary Indian players, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma. What remarkable feat did Pooran achieve?

Nicholas Pooran’s blistering innings ahead of Super 8s

In a Group C match against Afghanistan, Pooran faced the bowling of Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai. During the fourth over of the innings, Pooran unleashed an onslaught that left spectators in awe. He wasted no time, smashing the very first ball for a six. Azmatullah followed it up with a no-ball, and Pooran capitalized by slamming it for a boundary.

The pressure mounted on the bowler as Pooran was bowled out, but it was a free hit. Pooran continued his assault, hitting four more runs through leg byes. Pooran struck a four followed by two more sixes. In that single over, Pooran amassed an astonishing 36 runs—the most ever scored in a T20 International (T20I) over.

Pooran’s feat catapulted him into an elite list including three Indian players. Yuvraj Singh was the first to achieve this milestone. In 2007, he famously smashed England’s Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over.

Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh also joined this exclusive club. They scored 36 runs in an over against Afghanistan’s Karim Janat. Now, Nicholas Pooran stands shoulder-to-shoulder with these cricketing greats.

West Indies didn’t stop there. Their explosive batting duo of Pooran and Johnson Charles propelled them to a record-breaking powerplay. In that same innings, they scored an astounding 93 runs—the highest-ever powerplay total in a T20 World Cup match.

Pooran’s innings didn’t end with that over. He went on to play a scintillating knock of 98 runs against Afghanistan. Along the way, he became the first West Indies batter to reach 2000 runs in T20Is.

In this electrifying moment, Nicholas Pooran etched his name in cricket folklore, sharing the spotlight with Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma. The T20 format continues to produce thrilling moments, and Pooran’s record-breaking over will be remembered for years to come.
