In a most deadly terrorist attack in the history of New Zealand, at least 49 people were killed and more than 20 seriously injured in Christchurch last week.

The shooting was carried out by an Australian national named Brenton Tarrant, 28. He was against immigration and had planned the attack very carefully. He also had a 74-page manifesto where he called India, Turkey and China as possible enemies from the east.

The shooting took place at the Al Noor Mosque. Even a few players from the Bangladeshi cricket team were at the mosque offering the afternoon prayers. Bangladeshi players barely escaped the shooting.

Now, New Zealand Sports Minister Grant Robertson said that he hopes Bangladesh cricketers and the fans will feel safe touring the country in the near future. The Bangladeshi team were touring New Zealand but soon the series was called off on 15th March.

My hope is that in time the players and supporters will feel safe enough to return to New Zealand and I know that they know that they will be welcomed with open arms,” Robertson was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz.

Violence and hatred shown by one individual must not be allowed to destroy the friendship and respect that the New Zealand and Bangladesh cricket teams and our nations have long shared.” He said.
