New batting philosophy here to stay with better execution, claims Shreyas Iyer

India suffered a heavy loss against the visiting England side to trail in the five-match T20 series. The batting unit faltered massively as they folded for 124-7, and marked a poor start to the team’s new batting philosophy in the shortest format. Top scorer Shreyas Iyer outlined that the initiative won’t change, but the execution from the batsmen will change.

Ahead of the first encounter, keeping the all-important T20 World Cup in mind, Virat Kohli had revealed the team’s intention to play with more freedom. With the depth in the batting order, Shreyas Iyer also believes there is no need to panic with one failure.

“Definitely, it won’t change because if you see the batting line up we have and the power-hitters down the line, we don’t have to change anything to be honest.” Iyer said following India’s crushing 8-wicket loss.

Iyer also stated the importance of the ongoing five-match series against a top team like England. He claimed that it is a perfect platform to experiment for the mega event.

“We have come with a plan and we have to execute as much as possible because going into the world Cup we need to see to it that we have ticked all the boxes. This is a five match series, so it is a perfect time that we try different stuff and see what suits us,” Iyer said.

After the top order was dismantled mid-way through the powerplay, Iyer came into bat at Number 5. The batsman was asked about the change after Pant was slotted in Iyer’s usual Number 4 spot.

“Coming into Indian team, you have to be flexible with which batting position you will be batting. I haven’t made any changes, it is just the mindset, what the team requires and batted according to the situation,” he said.

“It was a challenging situation, we had to keep playing natural game and keep ticking scoreboard irrespective of losing early wickets.”

Under tremendous pressure, the Delhi Capitals played an exceptional innings and in the process, registered more than half of the team total. The rest of the batting unit were far from their best and were dismissed before they could attain any sort of momentum.
