Rajasthan Royals (RR) opening batter Jos Buttler became the first centurion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The Englishman struck a stellar 100 off 68 deliveries, to help RR post 193-8 in the first innings.
After being put into bat first, RR lost an early wicket, but Buttler took the MI bowling attack early on. He registered his second IPL century, after scoring 124 last year against SRH at Delhi.
The inaugural champions looked in a good position to cross the 200-run mark, however, a weak lower-middle order and potent death bowling led by Bumrah restricted the run flow.
Fearing that the 194 run target might be a few runs short, especially with one smaller boundary, Buttler said during the innings break:
“It’s a great feeling. Nice to contribute. A bit nervous, not sure if it’s a good score with the short boundary on one side. Mumbai always attack me with Bumrah. It’s hard work against the best in the world. I felt it was the short leg-side boundary against Thampi and took it on,”
Speaking about his celebration following his hundred, which had to wait following a review from MI, Buttler said:
“I thought I nicked it but I just wanted to wait and see. I got frustrated in the end a little bit, slowing down towards the end. That’s why I think we’re a few runs short,”
“Lengths will be key” – Buttler on RR’s approach in the second innings
RR are the only side in the 2022 IPL to have defended a score so far. The good batting surface at the DY Patil definitely suggests that the score is chaseable if the batters play accordingly, with there being no particular demons on the pitch.
Opining that the bowlers will have to stick to their lengths to defend the total against an imposing MI batting unit, Buttler added:
“Bumrah is the best in the world at the end of the innings, and my fellow Englishman, Mills did pretty well too. Lengths will be key. If there’s an early movement, we have to make the most of it and get early wickets.”
