Ashish Nehra claims Jasprit Bumrah will bag more five-wicket hauls in the series

Jasprit Bumrah headed into the series on the bank of severe criticism for his outing in the World Test Championship. The right-arm speedster went wicketless fixture and was criticized for not bowling full enough in Southampton.

However, Bumrah came back in style to claim four wickets in the first innings of the Test. He started the series in style by claiming the wicket of Rory Burns in the very first over with a booming inswinger. He was also primarily responsible for wiping out the tail order, an aspect that has eluded the Indian bowling unit despite their sensational form.

He did better as the match progressed. The Mumbai Indians bowler registered his highest test score of 28 and stretched India’s first-innings lead to almost 100. He then returned back to bowl and claimed a five-wicket haul in the second innings. It marked his second successive five-wicket haul, after already having claimed five wickets in an innings before during India’s win in the third Test of the 2018 tour.

Ashish Nehra noted how the constant bubble life can make it harder for a bowler to get rhythm. He added that wickets are on the horizon for the bowler. Speaking on Sony Network, he said:

“The sort of bowler Jasprit Bumrah is, you will see more five-wicket hauls from him in this series. Forget the numbers, it can be four, six or three. Once again, his bowling was praiseworthy and the best thing about him is that he knows very well when to put in the extra effort in Test cricket,” Nehra said.

Nehra also labelled Bumrah as an ideal player for a captain because of his ability to break partnerships and get wickets at regular intervals.

“If you see the second innings, he took one wicket at the start but after that when there was a partnership between Sibley and Joe Root, who broke it – Jasprit Bumrah. As a captain, you want a bowler who gets a breakthrough whenever the team requires,” he added.
