Coming in as a massive blow to India’s medal hopes at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, star Javelin thrower and Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the event due to an injury he sustained at the World Athletics Championships final.

The news was made official by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajeev Mehta via a statement to ANI. “Neeraj Chopra will not take part in Commonwealth Games 2022. He is not fit as he got injured in the finals of the World Athletic Championships. He informed us about this,” the statement read.

On 30th June, Neeraj broke his own personal record at the Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden, throwing a distance of 89.94, and clinching bronze. Moreover, the 24-year-old ended India’s 19-year-old medal drought at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, bagging a silver with an 88.13m throw.
