Manjeet prevailed in the 55kg Greco Roman category at the National Wrestling Championships after overpowering another Army man L. Sayon in their summit clash in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
It was a better-late-than-never moment for him Manjeet. The 30-year-old, who hails from Jhajjar in Haryana, utilized his strong defensive skills against his Manipuri opponent to contain his lead and finish with a stellar 5-0 result to clinch his maiden National gold.
“Injuries affected my career. I had a few National medals before, but this is my first gold,” a gratified Manjeet expressed after his win.
Meanwhile, the 60kg title was retained by the defending champion Gyanender Gyani. The 2019 Asian Games bronze medallist took on Vikram of Maharashtra and finished with a 3-1 scoreline.
“I have won several medals but I am struggling due to the lack of sponsorship despite being in an Olympic weight,” Gyanender asserted.
