National Record Holder Akshdeep Singh finishes 3rd in Slovakoa meet

Indian racewalker Akshdeep Singh, who holds the national record in the 20km race walk event, finished a commendable third at the Zahoracka Dvadsiatka, a World Athletics Race Walking Tour silver-level meet, held in Borsky Mikulas, Slovakia. This achievement is another feather in the cap for Akshdeep, who has been consistently delivering strong performances.

Akshdeep Singh’s performance at the event

Akshdeep clocked 1:20:52 to secure the third position. This timing is noteworthy considering that it is only slightly above his national record of 1:19:38. Akshdeep had already breached the Paris Olympics qualifying mark of 1 hour 20 minutes and 10 seconds, demonstrating his readiness for the upcoming global event.

The Slovakia meet saw a strong representation from India, with three other Indian athletes also finishing in the top 10. Suraj Panwar finished sixth with a time of 1:21:52, while Parmajeet Singh Bisht and Servin Sebastian secured the seventh and ninth positions with times of 1:22:10 and 1:22:20, respectively.

Earlier this year, he shattered his own national record en route to retaining the men’s 20km title at the National Open Race Walking competition. His performance in Slovakia further cements his status as a strong contender for the Paris Olympics 2024.

However, the road to Paris is not without its challenges. A country can send only three athletes to an individual track and field event in the Olympics. With Suraj Panwar, Paramjeet Bisht, and Vikas Singh also having breached the Paris Olympics men’s 20km race walk qualifying mark, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) will have to make a tough decision on who makes the cut for the Paris Games.
