PV Sindhu has taken the title as the first Indian woman to have won back-to-back medals at the Olympics. Sushil Kumar was the sole Indian athlete who had achieved such a feat before Sindhu. The badminton star returned home in Delhi on Tuesday with a bronze medal.

She finished in third place after winning against China’s He Bing Jiao. She won 21-13, 21-15.

Sindhu had registered a winning streak at the Games before she went down against China’s ace and currently world no 1 Tai Tzu Ying. But she could not hold up to Ying’s attacks. The match made it clear why Ying was world no 1. Sindhu did not admit defeat that easily. She gave her hundred percent until the very end of the match when she lost 18-21 and 12-21.

Sindhu did not sound disappointed when she gave an interview after losing the match to Ying. Instead, she mentioned how the stakes are so much higher this Olympics for her because she had previously won a medal for the country at the 2016 Rio Olympics. After registering one Olympic win, she felt she had to keep herself calm and focus on just giving her best.

“Very happy that I have won the bronze medal and very proud. It’s not easy to win back-to-back medals at the Olympics. It was very different in 2016 and it’s been very different in Rio. The pressure, the expectations were very high. It was very important for me to be calm and composed and just give my best.”

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi had previously chatted with the badminton ace before the Tokyo Games. They had agreed on having ice cream together after her campaign at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. When asked about whether the plan is still on, Sindhu said that they are supposed to meet on August 15 on India’s independence day.
