In a shocking turn of events, the Bangladesh cricket team’s all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, finds himself embroiled in a murder case. The incident occurred during the recent protests and violence that swept through Bangladesh, leaving hundreds dead and the nation in turmoil.

Accusation on Shakib Al Hasan

The case pertains to the death of a garment worker named Mohammed Rubel. His father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the complaint against Shakib and 146 others, accusing them of involvement in Rubel’s killing on August 7.

Shakib, a former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team and a former lawmaker, is either the 27th or 28th accused in the First Information Report (FIR). However, it’s important to note that he was not in Bangladesh on August 5 or at any time during the protests.

During that period, he was playing for the Bangla Tigers Mississauga in the Global T20 Canada league in Brampton from July 26 to August 9. Before that, he participated in the Major League Cricket in the USA until mid-July.

According to the case statement, some of the accused, allegedly acting on instructions from others, opened fire while hundreds of students, including Rubel, were protesting at Ring Road in the Adabor area on August 5. Rubel was wounded in the firing and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after two days.

The murder case was filed at Dhaka’s Adabor police station. Notably, the former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, and several former ministers and lawmakers from her party are also among the accused. Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign, and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over as the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government.

Following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government, significant changes occurred at the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Former national captain Faruque Ahmed became the new president after the resignation of incumbent Nazmul Hasan Papon.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the cricketing world watches closely. Shakib Al Hasan, once a hero on the field, now faces a different battle—one that transcends boundaries and raises questions about justice, politics, and the delicate balance between sports and society.
