The Mumbai court has directed the police to investigate molestation allegations against Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw, The charges were brought forward by social media influencer Sapna Gill. Earlier last year, Gill had raised charges against Shaw for molesting her at a suburban Andheri pub. Shaw, however, denied all the charges made against him.

What happened in Prithvi Shaw’s case

The incident in question dates back to February 2023 and reportedly took place at a pub in Andheri. It is alleged that a brawl ensued following an argument over taking selfies. Gill accused Shaw of molesting her at the pub. However, Shaw has categorically denied all the charges made against him.

In her complaint, Gill sought the registration of an FIR under IPC sections 354 (molestation), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) against Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav for allegedly assaulting her with a bat.

The court presided over by Metropolitan Magistrate S C Tayde, has instructed the police to submit a report of its enquiry by June 19. The court, however, dismissed Gill’s plea to seek action against the police for not registering a First Information Report (FIR) against Shaw.

Gill, who was arrested in February 2023 for attacking Shaw following the argument regarding clicking selfies, is currently out on bail. The police, in their preliminary investigation, had stated that Gill’s allegations against Shaw were “false and unfounded”, adding that Gill and her friend were drunk at the time.

This case has garnered significant attention due to Shaw’s prominence as a cricketer. Shaw is currently part of the Delhi Capitals IPL 2024 squad. In his first appearance for the franchise this season, the 24-year-old scored a quickfire 43 off 27 deliveries, but couldn’t make an impact against KKR on Wednesday.
