All eyes are on the auction of the 14th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) which will take place on February 18 in Chennai. However, prior to the much-awaited auction, CSK CEO Kashi Vishwanath has revealed big news about the coach Stephen Fleming and the captain MS Dhoni. He said that they would not attend the IPL 2021 auction from the venue, but will be available through the digital medium.
While speaking to InsideSport, Kashi Vishwanath said, “They (Fleming and Dhoni) are not coming to Chennai for IPL Auctions but in today’s time, there are so many mediums to stay connected. They will be with us digitally.”
Notably, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a rather forgettable season last year where they finished at the seventh and for the first time in the history of the league that they failed to reach the playoffs as well.
Meanwhile, the former India opener and also one of the IPL title-winning captains Gautam Gambhir has said that Chennai Super Kings should only focus to get a proper replacement for their Australian opener Shane Watson. He further added that all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has not been in his sublime form in recent times and team management might try to get a replacement for him as well at the auction.
While speaking on Star Sport’s Cricket Connected, Gambhir said: “Most importantly, I think they need to have a replacement straightaway for Shane Watson because obviously, that is one area. Plus, they didn’t have Suresh Raina last time around. So, Suresh Raina will be available.
“We are only talking about CSK because they haven’t qualified for the first time in the playoffs. That’s why there’s so much of talk and that’s when you’re playing away from home and your strength of the squad has always been built around the conditions you got to cater to – that’s Chepauk where it’s going to start spinning and gripping.”
Gambhir also revealed that the captain MS Dhoni might look at an off-spinner too because their key spinner Harbhajan Singh has been released prior to the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league as well. However, it will be interesting to see which players the CSK franchise will opt for.
