Monty Panesar vouches for Ashwin-Jadeja pair in the T20 World Cup

Team India are trying out permutations and combinations to pencil down their ideal playing eleven for the highly-anticipated T20 World Cup that will take place later this year. After a lot of close calls in ICC events, India will aim to make it count by taking advantage of the home conditions and a formidable pool of players.

Despite possessing a strong group of players, it won’t matter if the player combination is not immaculate. One such department is the spin bowling area which has plenty of contenders. The current spin contenders to make it into the squad are Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya.

While the combination of Chahal and Kuldeep has won several matches for the nation, their grip over the game has started to wane a little bit. This has prompted former England spinner Monty Panesar to suggest that India should go with the finger-spin bowling duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin for the mega event.

In an exclusive interview with the Times Of India, Panesar claimed that the upcoming months will prove to be very crucial for the wrist spinners.

“If I was Virat, I would pick Ashwin-Jadeja ahead of Kuldeep-Chahal for the World T20. That’s because of their experience and game-changing abilities. They both have all-round abilities. They both are big-match players. Why not pick them ahead of Chahal-Kuldeep?,” Panesar said

Ashwin was part of the last T20 World Cup squad which was held in India back in 2016. However, the off-spinner went down the pecking order in terms of selection and last represented the nation in the shortest format in 2017.

Former India player Dilip Vengsarkar had also vouched for Ashwin’s call back to the Indian white-ball setup. Ashwin, who is still India’s first-choice spinner in the longest spinner, will have an opportunity to knock on the selector’s door with an exemplary IPL season.

In a surprising claim, Panesar also stated that Harbhajan Singh can also enter the selection fray if he has a successful season with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing season of the IPL.

“This IPL is about the Indian spinners. You can’t undermine Harbhajan Singh. Why not pick him for the World Cup if he has a good IPL season? I think he has some cricket left in him. Ashwin, Jadeja and even Harbhajan will have the opportunity to be in the World Cup squad. All they need to have is a good IPL season,” Panesar concluded.
