Mohammedan Sporting Club (SC), a club with a rich history of over 100 years, etched a new chapter in its legacy by lifting its maiden I-League trophy in the 2023-24 season. This historic moment unfolded at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, where thousands of Mohammedan SC fans gathered to witness their club’s triumphant moment.
Mohammedan SC’s historic feat
Despite losing 3-1 to Delhi FC in their last league match, the scoreboard didn’t matter as the celebrations kicked off right after the final whistle. The largest cheer of the night was reserved for the crowning moment when Mohammedan Sporting captains Samad Ali Mallick, Zodingliana Ralte, and Joseph Adjei hoisted the coveted I-League trophy into the Kolkata sky.
The journey to this victory was not smooth. The club faced a rollercoaster ride in the past decade, including relegation from the I-League at the end of the 2013-14 season. However, ten years later, they bid farewell to the I-League again, but this time as champions, paving their way to the Indian Super League.
The title was secured earlier last week when Mohammedan won against Shillong Lajong in one of the most dominant I-League campaigns ever. Despite the anti-climatic start of the evening with Delhi FC scoring three goals past the champions in the last league game, the spirits of the Mohammedan fans remained high.
The goal scorers for Delhi FC were Alisher Kholmurodov, 18-year-old teenager Gwgwmsar Goyary, and Sergio Borboza. Mirjalol Kasimov scored the lone Mohammedan goal with a thunderous left-footed strike.
The match might have stumbled today, but our crown remains firmly in place! 💪🏻
