Indian cricket fans have long speculated about the retirement plans of former captain MS Dhoni. Recently, fast bowler Mohammad Shami shed light on Dhoni’s thinking around retirement.
After leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth IPL title in 2023, Dhoni promised to return for one more season. Despite expectations that he would announce his retirement after the 2024 IPL, Dhoni has remained silent.

However, the former CSK skipper is yet to make the announcement. Recently, Shami gave his opinion on Dhoni’s retirement saying that only the media wants him to retire and the cricketer isn’t worried too much.
“You [media] guys have been putting a question mark on his future the man himself says, ‘Dekha Jayega’ [let’s see],” said Shami on a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra.
Further speaking ahead, Shami recalled a conversation with Dhoni around retirement where the cricketer gave his opinion on when should a player retire.
“I had this conversation with Mahi bhai, asking ‘When should a player retire?”. He said, ‘First when you yourself get bored and second, Jab lage ki laat padne wali hai (when you realise that you would be kicked out of the team),’” Shami added.
“But the first and foremost thing is that when you stop enjoying the game, it’s a sign that your time has come. Better you choose the best moment to retire. Because your body starts intimating you if you can’t sustain a particular format. That’s when a player should call it time,” he further said.
Shami, currently undergoing rehabilitation after ankle surgery, remains focused on regaining fitness. His performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and the Champions Trophy 2025 awaits.
