As the cricketing world gears up for another thrilling Test series between India and Australia, senior pacer Mohammad Shami has expressed his confidence in India’s ability to secure a third consecutive series victory Down Under. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at stake, Shami’s optimism is a significant morale booster for the Indian team and its fans.

India’s recent performances in Australia have been nothing short of spectacular. The team clinched the Test series in 2018-19 and followed it up with another historic win in 2020-21. These victories were particularly impressive given the challenges posed by playing in Australian conditions and the absence of several key players during the 2020-21 series.

Mohammad Shami’s Confidence

Shami, who played a crucial role in the 2018-19 series, believes that India has what it takes to complete a hat-trick of series wins. “I believe India are the favourites to win the series. In the last series in Australia, we played with a young team, with many senior players absent, yet we still proved we were the best. I expect the next series to be highly competitive, but I’m confident that India will come out victorious,” Shami said.

Focus on Fitness and Recovery

Shami has been out of action since the ODI World Cup 2023 final due to surgery. However, he is determined to make a full recovery before returning to the national squad. Speaking at an awards function in Kolkata, Shami outlined his cautious approach to his return. “I don’t want to rush myself, even though I want to come back as soon as possible. It’s not advisable to return with any doubt. I need to be stronger, and the stronger I feel, the better it will be. My goal is to return at my strongest,” he explained.

Preparation for the Series

Shami emphasized the importance of being fully fit, both mentally and physically, before making a comeback. “I’ve already started bowling. But unless I’m 100 per cent in every aspect – both mentally and physically – I won’t consider returning to action. If needed, I’ll even play domestic cricket to ensure I’m at my best,” he added.

While Shami is optimistic, he acknowledges that the series will be highly competitive. Australia’s home advantage and their strong squad will pose significant challenges. However, Shami believes that India’s recent experiences and its ability to adapt to different conditions will be crucial in overcoming these challenges.
