Mithun Manjunath defeats Kidambi Srikanth in R16 of Thailand Masters

The Indian prodigy Mithun Manjunath stunned his senior pro Kidambi Srikanth in round 16(21-9, 13-21, 21-17) at the Thailand Masters on Thursday. Mithun displayed a dominating performance right from the start of the match and eventually booked a place in quarters with a comprehensive win.

This is Mithun’s second best performance BWF World Tour tournaments. His previous best was 2nd runner up in 2022 Orleans Masters. He will next face Mark Caljouw of Netherlands in quarters on 2nd February.

Mithun Manjunath rises to the occasion

Mithun Manjunath had a good game yesterday in round of 32 against G Jason. He continued the same against the experienced fellow countryman Srikanth in R16 as well. Mithun took the first game with an imperious display of skills. He maintained a significant lead and scored 7 consecutive points when the score was at 10-6 and ultimately conquered the game with 21-9.

Srikanth gave a strong reply in the second game as he tried to gain the lead. When the score was at 9-7 in his favour, the senior pro scored 10 consecutive points and thus extending the lead to 19-7. Though, Mithun found a way to get back into the game, it was too late as Kidambi took the second game with 21-13.

Both the Indian stars were engaged in in a serious battle in the decisive third game but the younger one succeeded in getting into a lead and maintained it through out the game. Mithun successully clinched the final game as well as the match.

This is Mithun’s second consecutive win against his senior compatriot, after Singapore Open win back in 2022. On the other hand, Kidambi Srikanth failed yet again as he struggled to reach the Quarters of World Tours in the last 9 months.
