Mithali Raj hints at stepping out of retirement next year

34

Former India Women’s Cricket team captain Mithali Raj recently decided to call it a day following a stupendous career in Cricket. She retires as one of the greatest ever players in women’s cricket with numerous batting and captaincy records to her name. The legendary Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar recently hailed Mithali Raj for her ‘stellar career.’ It seems Mithali Raj might make her return to the pitch but not for International matches. She revealed that she is open to play in the inaugural Women’s Indian Premier League(WIPL) next year.

Mithali Raj: I’m keeping that option open

“It would be lovely to be part of the first edition of the women’s IPL,” said Raj in her conversation on the ICC’s 100% Cricket Podcast. “I’m keeping that option open; I have not yet decided. There are a few more months to go before the women’s IPL happens,” she added.

Mithali Raj had a glorious international career that spanned 23 years. She is the highest run-getter in ODIs (7805 in 232 innings at an average of 50.68). In Tests, Mithali represented India in 12 matches, scoring 699 runs. She also scored a double-century in the longest format of the game.

Raj made her India debut as a 16-year-old in 1999 in an ODI against Ireland. She scored 68 against South Africa in a Women’s World Cup match in Christchurch in March in what proved to be her last international outing. Her tally of 10,868 runs makes her the highest run-scorer of all time in women’s international cricket.

Indian Premier League(IPL) gained popularity over the years and the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) had conducted one match with the Women’s team in 2018 while 4 matches were played in 2019 and 2020. The Women’s IPL(WIPL) was one of the agendas at GC meeting earlier this year. The board had proposed a six-team Women’s IPL. The full-fledged women’s tournament will commence in 2023.
