Mirabai Chanu, the Olympic silver medallist from Tokyo, has once again made India proud by qualifying for the Paris Olympics 2024. The 29-year-old weightlifter secured her spot in the women’s 49kg category, finishing third in Group B at the IWF World Cup.

Chanu’s journey to the Paris Olympics was not without its challenges. She had been on a six-month hiatus due to a hip tendonitis injury. Despite this setback, she made a triumphant return at the IWF World Cup, lifting a total of 184 kg (81kg in snatch and 103kg in clean and jerk). Although these lifts were below her personal best, they were enough to secure her a spot in the upcoming Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu’s qualification for the Paris Olympics marks her third appearance at the Games. This achievement is particularly significant as she is the only Indian weightlifter to have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Chanu’s performance at the IWF World Cup was closely watched by sports enthusiasts and experts alike. Despite her injury and the subsequent break from competitive lifting, she managed to make five clean lifts. Her performance at the World Cup has set high expectations for her performance in Paris.

The official announcement for the qualification will come after the conclusion of the World Cup when the Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) will be updated. The top 10 lifters from each weight class will qualify for the Paris Olympics. Chanu, who is currently ranked second in the women’s 49kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR), behind China’s Jian HuiHua, is all set to make her mark at the Paris Games.
