Jose Mourinho was sacked in december and with him went his trusted assistant manager Rui Faria. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was made the caretaker manager since then and had to convince the Manchester United board with the results to earn the permanent manager job. As the building blocks of the new regime are being put in place, veteran and well known face around these parts, Mike Phelan was confirmed as the second in command earlier today.

Mike Phelan said: “I am thrilled to be back as Assistant Manager. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a player in 1989 and I am delighted to be able to continue that relationship in this key role.
“Since returning in December, I have enjoyed working with Ole, Michael, Kieran, Mark and Emilio and we are all focused on preparing for the new season.
