In the realm of Test cricket, where records echo through time, Joe Root, the English batting maestro, is poised to etch his name alongside the greats. As he inches closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s monumental run tally, the cricketing world watches with bated breath.

Joe Root becomes 8th highest run scorer in Tests

Recently, during the second Test against West Indies at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Root notched up his 32nd Test century. His sublime innings of 122 runs showcased his class and determination. But this was more than just another century; it was a milestone that propelled him past the legendary Shivnarine Chanderpaul, making him the eighth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket.

Root now stands 60 runs short of completing 12,000 Test runs. This feat would place him among the elite few who have scaled such heights. But the ultimate prize lies beyond—a chance to surpass the iconic Sachin Tendulkar.

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, believes that Root’s journey doesn’t end here. In his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan boldly states that Root could eventually overtake Tendulkar as the highest run-scorer in Test history. Root’s consistency, adaptability, and unwavering focus make this prophecy more than mere speculation.

Vaughan aptly describes Root as “the rock.” His batting approach combines flair with responsibility. Root’s ability to score quickly without letting ego dictate his shots sets him apart. And Vaughan’s admiration extends to Root’s tactical play, including the audacious reverse-scoop shot that he unveiled after crossing the century mark.

“Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually. With the bat generally, they did not look reckless like they have in the past. They are scoring quickly, but it doesn’t look like their egos are taking over. They are just playing with good sense,” Vaughan wrote.

“As the rock, Root is obviously key to that, and I love that he kept the reverse scoop in the locker until he was past 100 and England’s lead was massive,” Vaughan added.

Root also eyes two significant English records held by Alastair Cook. He is on the verge of surpassing Cook’s record for the most Test centuries by an England batter (currently at 33). Additionally, he trails Cook by 532 runs in the race to become England’s leading Test run-scorer.
