Rohit Sharma became the second captain in the ongoing IPL to be fined for slow over-rate. Since this is the first offence, Sharma would be fined a sum of Rs 12 Lakh.
MS Dhoni, the skipper of CSK, was the first to be fined after maintaining a slow over-rate against Delhi Capitals.
The Hitman was absent for the majority portion of the second innings and as a result, Kieron Pollard took charge of things in the field at Chepauk.
“Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on April 20,” the IPL said in a statement.
“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Sharma was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the statement added.
The subsequent second offence will see the captain being fined Rs 24 Lakh while the teammates will have to shell out Rs 6 Lakh or 25 per cent of the match fees, whichever is lesser.
The third offence will mean that the captain will have to pay Rs 30 Lakh as a fine and face a one-match ban as well. The teammates will be docked 50 per cent of the match fees or 12 Lakh, whichever is lesser.
Following the side’s second defeat in the tournament which places them fourth in the table after having played a game extra, Sharma lamented the poor batting in the middle overs. The skipper top-scored with 44, but the rest of the batting unit failed to click which resulted in a below-par first innings total of 137.
“After the start, we got we should have batted better in the middle overs. It is happening time and again. We aren’t able to capitalize on our starts and we need to understand as a batting unit. But you have to give credit to the Delhi bowlers, they kept it tight and kept taking wickets,” Rohit said after the match
Composed batting from Shikhar Dhawan and Steve Smith propelled the DC unit to their third win of the tournament. Things were expected to be tough for DC after having played all their games at the Wankhede so far. However, the team were clinical in their approach and racked a crucial win.
