The astronomical rise of the Indian Premier League (IPL) continues as Mumbai Indians alone hold more value than some of the major American sports franchises. The competition, incepted in 2008, now boasts a 24 percent yearly growth rate.

According to a recent study by Forbes, the average value of an IPL franchise stands at a whopping $1.04 billion. The same figure stood at $67 million in 2009.
In comparison, NBA franchises have seen a yearly growth rate of 16%, putting the average value of a solitary team at $2.48 billion. On the other hand, the growth rate of NFL teams read at 16% with the average franchise value being $3.48 billion.
Mumbai Indians are the most valuable IPL team at $1.3 billion. The league is by far the most financially viable cricket competition in the world considering its potent media rights and broadcast deals.
According to Ajimon Francis, managing director at Brand Finance India, a brand valuation and strategy consultancy:
“The IPL is the most prominent cricket league in the world in terms of attracting sponsors and media rights. A lot of credit goes to founders of the IPL, who took ideas from the NBA and European soccer leagues, and good governance by the BCCI with regards to clear visibility of team funding and ensuring the tournament continued during Covid,”
Here are all the IPL franchises ranked by their value:
1. Mumbai Indians (Value: $1.3 billion)
2. Chennai Super Kings (Value: $1.15 billion)
3. Kolkata Knight Riders (Value: $1.1 billion)
4. Lucknow Super Giants (Value: $1.075 billion)
5. Delhi Capitals (Value: $1.035 billion)
