Indian boxing ace MC Mary Kom’s Commonwealth Games trials concluded in grief after the six time world champion suffered a knee injury and was forced to pull out. It’s now revealed that Mary sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and will undergo reconstruction surgery.

On Friday, during her 48kg semifinal bout against Haryanvi pugilist Nitu, Mary Kom suffered a twist in her left knee within minutes of the opening round, and had to withdraw from the fight. Nitu, who was declared the winner via RSCI (Referee Stops Contest due to injury), helped to escort Mary out of the ring.

As the scans performed on Saturday revealed, the 39-year-old veteran suffered an ACL injury and as its a “complete tear of ACL”, the doctor has suggested Mary to undergo complete reconstruction surgery. As of now, Mary has been advised “ice application and knee support” along with prescribed medication which include pain killer.

The unfortunate injury, thus, has caused the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist to miss the upcoming Commonwealth Games, set to take place in Birmingham between 28th July and 8th August.

“It has never happened to me before and I am struggling to come to terms with it,” a disheartened Mary said in an interview with The New Indian Express over the phone, “It’s devastating.”

“It is very painful,” she detailed the injury, “While I was some 30 seconds into the bout, suddenly I could feel as if my leg was stuck somewhere. There was pain and I could not move. There were no signs of any discomfort before the bout. There was no signal. It just happened.”
