Six-time world champion boxer, Mary Kom, has stepped down from her role as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. The celebrated boxer, who also won a bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012, was supposed to oversee the nation’s logistics for the July 26-August 11 Games. Her appointment was first announced by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on March 21.

Mary Kom resigns stating personal reasons

In her resignation letter to IOA President PT Usha, Mary Kom cited personal reasons for her decision. She expressed regret at not being able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and stated, “It is embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice.” Despite stepping down from her role, Mary Kom affirmed her continued support for the athletes and her country.

The role of a chef-de-mission is crucial in any national contingent participating in an international multi-disciplinary event. They are tasked with looking after the athletes and their well-being and serve as the point of contact with the various organizing committees and the sporting members of the contingent.

PT Usha, in her statement, expressed sadness at Mary Kom’s decision but respected her privacy. She stated, “We are sad that Olympic medal-winning boxer and Chairperson of the IOA Athletes Commission Mary Kom has stepped down citing personal reasons. We respect her decision and her privacy.”

PT Usha also mentioned that she would make the appropriate consultations and soon announce a replacement for Mary Kom.
