MC Mary Kom, the Indian boxing icon and six-time World Champion will be skipping the upcoming IBA Elite Women’s World Boxing Championships, as well as the subsequent 2022 Asian Games. The motto behind her decision is to give exposure to upcoming boxers, as well as to prepare for the 2022 Commonwealth Games set to take place later this year.

The 2012 London Olympic Games bronze medallist, who has bagged six gold medals at the World Championships, decided to withdraw herself from the upcoming trials of the IBA Elite Women’s World Boxing Championships, which is set to take place from Monday till Wednesday and will also include Asian Games weights divisions for the women, except for the 51kg and 69kg categories, which will have their trials from 11th to 14th March to give more breathing room to the pugilists.

“I would like to withdraw to give opportunity to the younger generation to make a name for themselves on the International stage and get exposure and experience of major tournaments. I would like to focus on the preparation for the Commonwealth Games only,” Mary Kom revealed to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).

Boxers currently training at the national camps, as well as those who participated in the Tokyo Games last year, will be seen in action at the selection trials. While the female pugilists will have their Asian Games selection trials this month, the trials for men will take place in May, followed by the Commonwealth Games selection trials for both men and women in the next month.

“Mary Kom has been the torchbearer for Indian boxing since the last two decades and has inspired countless boxers and sports persons across the world.  We completely respect her decision and it is a testimony of her champion character to make way for the other boxers,” BFI president Ajay Singh said, “We are delighted that we have such a good bench strength and are looking forward to the younger generation to make the nation proud and I hope and wish Mary all the best with her preparations for the CWG.”

The IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships will commence on 6th May in Istanbul, Turkey and will last until 21st May. The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be conducted from 28th July to 8th August in Birmingham England, followed by the 2022 Asian Games which will head to Hangzhou, China from 10th to 25th September.
