In a thrilling turn of events at the Paris Paralympics, Indian shuttler Manisha Ramdass has kept India’s medal hopes alive by advancing to the women’s singles semifinals in the SU5 category. However, it was a day of mixed fortunes for the Indian contingent as Palak Kohli and Mandeep Kaur were eliminated from the competition following their respective quarterfinal matches.
Manisha Ramdass Shines Bright
Manisha Ramdass, a 19-year-old shuttler born with Erb’s palsy affecting her right arm, showcased her exceptional skills and determination on the court. Competing in the SU5 category, which is for players with upper limb impairments, Manisha faced Japan’s Mamiko Toyoda in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Indian left-hander displayed remarkable control and precision, defeating Toyoda with a score of 21-13, 21-16.
The match lasted just 30 minutes, during which Manisha’s dominance was evident. Her powerful smashes and strategic placements left Toyoda struggling to keep up. This victory not only secured her a spot in the semifinals but also boosted India’s chances of clinching a medal in badminton at the Paralympics.

Palak Kohli’’s Valiant Effort
In contrast, Palak Kohli, who competed in the SL4 category, faced a tough challenge against Indonesia’s Khalimatus Sadiyah. The SL4 category is for athletes with less severe impairments compared to the SL3 category. Palak, a para world championship bronze medallist, put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell short. She lost the match 19-21, 15-21 in a closely contested 28-minute encounter.
Mandeep Kaur’s Struggles
Mandeep Kaur, competing in the SL3 category, faced Nigeria’s third seed Bolaji Mariam Eniola in her quarterfinal match. The SL3 category is for players with severe lower-limb disabilities who compete on a half-width court. Unfortunately, Mandeep struggled to find her rhythm and was unable to pose a significant challenge to her opponent. She lost the match 8-21, 9-21 in just 23 minutes.
