Manchester United recorded a hard fought yet comfortable 2-0 victory against Reading to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Reading dominated almost all the stats including possession, shots and corners but the Red Devils’ lead never seemed to be in any considerable danger at any point in the match.
Reading started the game positively, playing better than the home side the first quarter of the game, creating a couple of chances but failing to capitalize on them. Their lack of prowess in front of goal is the reason why they’re in a relegation battle in the Championship this season.
Solskjaer made several changes for the match, and United’s midfield didn’t seem to control the game like it usually does with Pogba and Matic, but they still managed to string some excellent passes together for Fred to slot the ball home only to be denied by the offside flag. Shortly after this decision, the VAR was called into action to check on a possible foul on Juan Mata in the build up, and United were awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute. The Spaniard made no mistake from the spot and United led 1-0.
in the 4th minute of first half stoppage time. Alexis Sanchez played a beautiful pass to Romelu Lukaku who showed brilliant footwork and composure to go around the Reading keeper and score United’s second goal. The Belgian has now scored 3 goals in 3 games and seems to have found his old form back.
The second half was event-less, except for a couple of times both keepers made a brilliant save each and the much awaited debut of Dutch youngster Tahith Chong who had a decent 30 minutes. Sanchez however limped off the field in the 64th minute, which could be cuase for concern with the Tottenham game coming up next week.
