Malvika Bansod, ranked 43rd in the world, faced off against the world number 25, Kristy Gilmour, in a gripping round-of-16 match. The contest lasted for one hour and five minutes, with Malvika emerging victorious with scores of 21-17, 19-21, 21-16. This hard-fought win highlights Malvika’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

The match against Gilmour was not Malvika’s first impressive performance in the tournament. In the opening round, she defeated Paris Olympics bronze medalist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia. This victory set the stage for her encounter with Gilmour, where Malvika once again proved her mettle.
After the match, Malvika expressed her elation at reaching the quarterfinals of a Super 1000 tournament for the first time. “This is the first time I will play a quarterfinal of a Super 1000 tournament, so it is a dream come true and the biggest achievement of my life so far,” she said. She also acknowledged the challenging conditions and credited her improved physical strength and shuttle control for her success.

Malvika’s journey in the China Open is far from over. She now faces a formidable opponent in the quarterfinals: Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, a two-time world champion and the fourth seed in the tournament.
