The Indian women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa & Tanisha Crasto pulled off a massive upset to defeat the former World Champions Matsumoto Mayu & Wakana Nagaha in Malaysia Open 2024. Winning the match, they have booked a berth in the Quarter final round.
On Thursday, they beat the former World No. 1 Japanese pair of Wakana Nagahara and Matsumoto Mayu 21-19, 13-21, 21-15. The WR-24 Indian team has now made it to the quarters of the prestigious event and will face Iwanaga and Nakanishi. Earlier in the first round, the Indian duo defeated USA pair of Allison Lee and Corbett 21-13, 21-16.

In the opening game, the two teams were deadlocked at six points apiece until the Indian duo gained momentum and took a four-point lead at ten to six. However, there were many curveballs as the Japanese WR-9 squad entered the game at 16-16. However, Tanisha and Ashwini managed to end the match with a 21-19 score.
The second game turned out to be one sided as the Indians were unable to play their usual offensive style and committed a few unintentional mistakes. However, the third game turned out to be a surprise. At one point, the scores were even at 9-9. However, the Indian duo emerged to be the better side and made fewer mistakes, winning the match 21-15.
