National boxing champion Deepak Singh struck gold at the Makran Cup in Chabahar in Iran in the 49kg category. He was the lone boxer to finish in the top of the podium as the other five Indian boxers stumbled in the final hurdle. Deepak outclassed Jaafar Naseri to win gold.
PL Prasad lost his 52kg finals to Omid Safa Ahmedi whereas Commonwealth Games silver medallist Manish Kaushik reciprocated the same enduring fate in the 60kg category to Daniel Shah Baksh.
The fate of Duryodhan Singh Negi (69kg), Sanjeet (91kg), and Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Satish Kumar (+91kg) too were the same. Apart from the five silver medals, India also bagged two bronze medals in the tournament as Rohit Singh (64kg) and Manjeet Singh (75kg) lost their semi-final bouts earlier.
Overall, it was a good show by the Indians as they finished with eight medals. Given that the Tokyo Olympics is only a year away, this result should boost their prospects to win a medal immensely.
