LSG is stunned by sensational Ashutosh in the Vizag thriller

Ashutosh Sharma’s outstanding finishing performance helped the Delhi Capitals secure an exciting one-wicket victory in the last over while chasing down 210.

Where was the match won?

After DC fell to 66/5 in a 209-run chase, Ashutosh Sharma struck an undefeated 66 of 31 balls. The Delhi Capitals won the match thanks to Ashutosh’s fearless, clean striking in the final overs of a match full of dramatic turns. With one wicket remaining, he helped DC reach their target by hitting 35 of the 61 runs they need in the final five overs. In contrast to LSG’s innings, which featured a lot of front-end power hitting, DC faltered and fell before Ashutosh’s aggression helped them cross the finish line.

The Lucknow Super Giants

Mitchell Marsh is at the forefront of the powerplay.

64/1 is the phase score (RR 10.67; 4s/6s: 7/4).

Inside the powerplay, the Australian imposed himself with some devastating smashes, especially against anything that was short in length, which the Delhi Capitals were guilty of. The first attack was directed against his Australian teammate Mitchell Starc, whom he hit for six in the opening over, and the Delhi Captials’ strike force. Marsh pounded the onside boundary as he went for 21 in Starc’s following over after Aiden Markram had lofted him over cover for six. Vipraj Nigam was able to get Markram holing out for a lengthy time even as he was pulled up for boundaries when DC responded to the assault by using a wrist-spinner too soon. Overall, Lucknow was in a really comfortable position following the powerplay, and DC had to come up after that.

Pooran takes over in the middle overs.

Phase Score: 106/3 (4s/6s: 6/10; RR 11.77)

There wasn’t much of a difference between after a powerplay ended and before. As Marsh and Nicholas Pooran both got their eye in, LSG actually launched a more aggressive onslaught. The former achieved a well-earned half-century off 21 balls, and Pooran showed off his skills by taking Nigam out after being dropped once and hitting him for three sixes. Overall, Pooran dominated the middle overs and was devastating against spin. Before Marsh misplayed a powerful shot off a slower ball from Mukesh, the pair put up 87 in 42 balls. Pooran was unfazed by it and went on to hammer Tristan Stubbs for four straight sixes and a four in the thirteenth over. He also scored a half-century off just 24 balls along the process. LSG lost both Pooran, who was bowled by a reverse-swinging delivery from Starc, and Rishabh Pant, who holled out to long out for a duck, just as they were about to launch a larger assault.

Death Overs: LSG taper off

Score for Phase: 39/4 (RR 7.8; 2/2) 4s/6s

The wickets getting into the back end and the absence of significant firepower in the lower-order did not aid LSG’s case. In the last over, Mitchell Starc struck twice, keeping LSG off momentum, while Ayush Badoni was caught in the deep of Kuldeep. They were still undefeated at the finish, though, thanks to David Miller, who gave the innings a much-needed boost with two sixes off the final two balls, pushing them over 200. Even though the total was intimidating, the Delhi Capitals won the final overs after they had threatened to reach 250 at one stage.

The Delhi Capitals

Delhi falters and stutters during Powerplay

Phase Score (RR 9.6; 4/6s: 7/2): 58/4

With two wickets in the opening over, Shardul Thakur gave LSG the ideal start. A slower ball first took out Jake Fraser-McGurk, then Abishek Porel also mistimed a powerful hit. DC was in terrible shape after Sameer Rizvi was caught behind by M Siddharth, the LSG impact player. However, captain Axar Patel and the seasoned Faf du Plessis were able to start a repair job. As the chase resumed, Siddharth was taken out for 15 in his subsequent over and Shardul for 13. However, Patel swept Digvesh Rathi right into the square leg’s hands as they were settling into the groove.

Middle overs – Back on course

90/2 is the phase score (RR 10, 4s/6s: 6/6).

Tristan Stubbs, Ashutosh Sharma, and Vipraj Nigam took advantage of LSG’s waning bowling resources to give DC a push in the middle overs. Sharma and Stubbs put on a blistering 48-run partnership shortly after Du Plessis’s dismissal. M Siddharth lofted Stubbs for consecutive sixes with a huge over, but after the first one was lost, he was dismissed with a new ball. However, his exit did not slow down DC’s progress because Vipraj started working nearly right away. He pounded Ravi Bishnoi, hitting him for 16 in one over and picking 12 off Shabaz Ahmed in the next. As a result, DC needed 61 runs in the last five overs.

Death overs – Nerveless Ashutosh seals the thriller

Phase score – 62/3 [RR: 13.77, 4s/6s: 6/5]

Right through the rear end, there were many turns. Ashutosh and Nigam both scored 20 runs off Prince Yadav’s 16th over, but the former was out after failing to complete a lap in the next over. As Kuldeep Yadav was run out in a mix-up and Bishnoi removed Mitchell Starc, LSG continued to respond with consistent wickets. However, when he went on strike, Ashutosh continued to clear the ropes. He hit Bishnoi for three boundaries immediately after Starc was gone, and he also broke Prince Yadav after Kuldeep was removed. Mohit Sharma had a chance in the last over with only six needed when he overbalanced and was hit on the pad by a Shabaz turner. Pant missed the stumping due to the deflection, and fortunately for Mohit, he was not LBW on review either. To put Ashutosh back on strike, he calmly tapped a single the next ball. Ashutosh then casually lofted his fifth six to end the game.

Brief Scores: Lucknow Super Giants 209/8 (Nicholas Pooran 75, Mitchell Marsh 72; Mitchell Starc 3-42) lost to Delhi Capitals 211/9 (Ashutosh Sharma 66*; Shardul Thakur 2/19) by 1 wicket
