The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise has been abuzz with speculation about KL Rahul’s future. As the IPL 2025 mega auction looms, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka has shed light on the matter.
KL Rahul’s future at LSG
KL Rahul has been an integral part of the LSG family since the franchise’s inception in 2022. As their captain, he led them to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023.
Goenka recently met with Rahul, dampening rumours of his exit. The animated chat between them during this year’s IPL garnered attention, but Goenka clarified that such interactions were common over the past few years.
“Look, I’ve been meeting KL regularly over the last three years. I’m a little surprised this meeting got so much attention. As I’ve said we have not taken any call till the retention rules are out,” Goenka told reporters while unveiling Zaheer Khan as their team mentor.
Goenka emphasized that Rahul is like family and will remain so. His contributions have been significant, and the LSG owner values his role within the team.
“But KL has been an integral and important part of the LSG family since inception. He’s played a very important role. He’s like family and will be family.”
Regarding retentions, Goenka stated that they would decide once the rules are out. The team has ample time (September, October, and November) to make informed choices. The impact of these decisions on the team’s medium-term future necessitates careful consideration.

“We have all of September, October and November to decide that. Let the policies be out. We have not even thought about the team going forward, whether retention will be three-four-five or six, we have no clue,” Goenka said.
“Let us see, there is enough time, so bit by bit. Whatever decisions we take today will impact us for the medium-term future, so it has to be very well thought out and considered.”
“There is enough time for it so it’s too early. Let the BCCI announce the policy first, then there will be discussions.”
Rahul’s fate at LSG remains uncertain, but Goenka’s words affirm his importance and the thoughtful approach the franchise will take in shaping their squad for IPL 2025.
