Former Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal has had his say on two Ajax players – Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong.
Former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has come out to make an open statement on de Ligt saying that he should join either Barcelona or Manchester City.
18-year-old Matthijs de Ligt has had an amazing season for Ajax, captaining them to a Champions League semi final defying all odds. Also country wise, him along with his defensive partner Virgil Van Dijk have had a superb partnership.
Even while Van Gaal’s ex team Manchester United are currently linked with de Ligt, the Dutchman agrees with Peter Bosz who said that de Ligt should join Manchester City.
“I think exactly the same. Although De Ligt can go to Barcelona too, because their central defenders are not too good either,” Van Gaal told Fox Sports.
“He could play at Barcelona, but he could play for Manchester City also, and in that case I would choose Pep Guardiola over Lionel Messi.”
Then when asked about Frenkie de Jong’s move to Barcelona, Van Gaal said that the midfielder will endure a tough period at the club. He said that the player will have to adapt to playing in a new role while competing for a place in the starting 11.
“I think it’s going to be very difficult for him there,” he said. “Not only because he might get a different role, but he also has to play those other players from the starting line-up.
“He is also lucky that Barcelona has been eliminated in the semi-final [of the Champions League], because then their status will be different.
“I think that as a player you should also choose a club where you can always play. The question is whether that is justified in Barcelona.
